Day 19, part 2: SA + Cape Town + Cape of Good Hope

Today’s tidbit: “It is only in adventure that some people succeed in knowing themselves – in finding themselves.” ― Andrew Gide

It’s important to see and experience as much of South Africa as possible to get a full appreciation for the country, culture and people. I’m glad we were able to do that. Cape Town is what most people in the USA think of when they hear South Africa, that and a safari I think. It is without a doubt a gorgeous + diverse place and I can see why it’s such a popular travel destination! Last week I shared our experience at Imizamo Yethu Township. As I mentioned, this Cape Town township is situated in the picturesque seaside suburb of Hout Bay. It was definitely a humbling and memorable experience. Moving on, in the afternoon we continued to Hout Bay and Cape of Good Hope (Cape Point). Remember Table Mountain? The same applied here, you are just surrounded by spectacular panoramic views. Absolutely gorgeous.

As we were stopped at a red light, kids heading home from school were at the corner. I waved and absolutely loved how excited they were. I mean look at their reaction!!

{drive + Hout Bay} Imizamo Yethu Township is only a short distance from the world famous Hout Bay beaches. It is sad people so close by are living like this and as many said, the City seems to have forgotten this place.

As the website states, “Scenic Hout Bay is a lively coastal town with a lovely swimming beach and a picturesque harbour where you can buy some of the best fish and chips in the world. The pretty town lies in a protected bay between Chapman’s Peak and Mount Sentinel. Getting there is an easy and beautiful drive from the city centre. Apart from its scenic beauty, Hout Bay is well known for its fishing prowess and is the epicentre of Cape Town’s crayfish industry.” Read more.

{Table Mountain National Park + Cape Point}

As the website states, “Cape Point, the most south-westerly tip of Africa, is a spectacular sight, covered in endemic fynbos and home to breathtaking bays, beaches and rolling green hills and valleys, just 60km outside of Cape Town. Cape Point falls within the Cape Floral Region, a World Heritage Site, and is the most southerly point within the Good Hope section of Table Mountain National Park. The Cape Floral Region is one of the richest areas for plants in the world – it is home to nearly 20% of Africa’s flora. Apart from the spectacular view, you’ll be able to see the most powerful lighthouse on the South African coast, which helps guide ships safely through perilous waters that have seen to the end of many a vessel.” Read more.

At the entrance we were greeted by a family of baboons.
