Impromptu {little details} session | Old Town, Alexandria, VA
Today’s tidbit: “Today, just take time to smell the roses, enjoy those little things about your life, your family, spouse, friends, job. Forget about the thorns—the pains and problems they cause you—and enjoy life” ― Bernard Kelvin Clive
As you may have noticed by my blog posts, lately I have been photographing a lot of people. Whether it’s maternity, couples or babies I have really been enjoying capturing those genuine moments. The more shoots I do the more I’m finding out that while it normally starts out with an idea for a pose it turns into me snapping away capturing the candid shots, allowing the natural beauty and true expressions to come out. Those are my favorite photographs! I seem to always notice the little details, no matter where I am. I try to capture these details and moments in every photo shoot I do, whether it’s for a client or on my own.
With the gorgeous weather we were having in July, wandering around with a camera was the perfect way to spend an afternoon. Although I know I will be back, it was a nice way to close the chapter on living and working in Old Town, Alexandria. I will be breaking up my Old Town session into 3 posts, with this first post focusing on nature, texture and black + white.

As I mentioned earlier, my lease ended on the house I was renting the end of July. Taking a break from packing, I took advantage of the terrific weather and the fact I lived only 5 miles away from Old Town, Alexandria and decided to do an impromptu photo shoot. When I was working at TGD I would drive through a lot of the side streets, always noticed something new. There were so many times I wanted to stop and document it but I was in a rush or didn’t have my camera.
Now I set aside time in the afternoon to just go explore, walking up and down the quaint brick sidewalks taking everything in. From the antique shops and boutiques to the wide variety of delicious cuisine, King St. is always a popular area. When you wander a little further and branch off the main drag you find all these beautiful little details… from colorful doors and houses to cobble stone roads and ivy lining the brick walls. This is what makes Old Town so charming. I love it!
Beautiful Old Town by the water. When I was at TGD I worked close by the water and would often take afternoon breaks, walking around and enjoying the area, and fresh air.
Texture!
Hello black + white, charm, ivy and little details!
And last but not least… a dog water tasting station I came across! Too cute.
Isn’t it charming?! Before I knew it, my memory card was almost full and I had been exploring for almost 3 hours. I enjoy afternoon adventures like these! It takes me back to high school when I spent my life at the barn riding and taking pictures of anything and everything. There is so much natural beauty around if you open your eyes.
Look for part 2 of this shoot early next week!
Great shots! I love all the ivy creeping up the brick. 🙂
great perspectives!
You are so talented… love seeing the beauty of nature and people through your lens
