Day 14: SA + Garden Route National Park + The Dunes Resort
Today’s tidbit: “All journeys have secret destinations of which the traveler is unaware.” ― Martin Buber
Last week I shared our morning in Port Alfred, which was spent on a boat cruise around the Royal Alfred Marina. Afterwards we loaded up the bus and continued on our journey…. another day, another adventure, another scenic long drive. We had two stops to break up the drive, 1.exploring Garden Route National Park, Tsitsikamma and 2. lunch and walking around The Waterfront.
Sneak peek image: The couple in the pink and blue were from our group. I’m next to them taking pictures.

As I’ve mentioned, along drives throughout the whole tour we saw a variety of landscapes and housing.
{Garden Route National Park + Tsitsikamma} In the morning when we arrived, it was cool and cloudy but turned into a sunny afternoon.
As the website states, “Along the South Coast of South Africa lies one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in the world, home to the Garden Route National Park.
A mosaic of ecosystems, it encompasses the world renowned Tsitsikamma and Wilderness sections, the Knysna Lake section, a variety of mountain catchment, Southern Cape indigenous forest and associated Fynbos areas. These areas resemble a montage of landscapes and seascapes, from ocean to mountain areas, and are renowned for its diverse natural and cultural heritage resources.” Read more.
There were lots of these little guys wandering around, Dassie. This was in the beginning but you’ll see more as we climb to the bridge.
We spotted a whale in the picture below (top left)!
Although I don’t do too well with heights, after hiking around we climbed down the steep steps and walked across the long suspended bridges. It was an amazing feeling standing in the middle. My mom stayed at the top and took the pictures looking down (you can see her in blue in the picture below).
{The Waterfront} Next stop, a shopping area along the water where we wandered around and stopped for lunch.
Back on the road… beautiful views.
{The Dunes Resort} After a long day, our last stop where we stayed for one night.
As the websites states,” The Dunes Resort is located in the heart of the Garden Route right on the Keurbooms beach with private access to the public beach. The Dunes is a well located and comfortably luxurious hotel and conference venue within ten minutes of the premier holiday town of Plettenberg Bay and approximately 70 minutes from George which is the closest airport and about two and a half hours from Port Elizabeth.” Read more.
Our group enjoyed dinner out on the balcony, good conversation and of course some of the drink specials.
Check back later this week as we explore Oudtshoorn, where I rode an ostrich and explored caves!
Beautiful views, proud you went on the bridge! It’s so cool you saw a whale and those dassies are adorable. I’m surprised one didn’t find its way back to the US with you 🙂
Very true! There were so many critters I wanted to bring back but they belong in their natural environments… so instead I took a LOT of pictures 🙂
This was a really beautiful day with such a variety of scenery and critters. Too bad my knee would not let me experience the suspension bridge but taking pictures was also useful. Would love to hike and explore Tsitsikamma in more depth next time as well as explore Knysna although the shopping was amazing there. Love the crafts everywhere and great gifts! Awesome photos per usual 🙂
Although it started out cooler and cloudy it ended up being a beautiful day with lovely scenery and adventure for sure. It was a nice break from the bus to get out and hike around! Would definitely like to go back and spend longer as well. And yes, nothing better than handmade crafts!
What a gem! The photos are wonderful. A beautiful montage of the SA coast…fauna and flora! And, I wish I was at the market with you!!! Love the art and African Proverbs 🙂
Thanks Linda! It was beautiful… and the market was wonderful! I loved the African Proverbs as well, and bought the leopard one… important to remember.
