Day 17: SA + Stellenbosch
Today’s tidbit: “Certainly, travel is more than the seeing of sights; it is a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living.” ― Miriam Beard
… one of my favorite quotes that sums up this whole SA adventure.
Earlier this week I continuing along the Western Cape as we drove to Stellenbosch, one of our last destinations. The following day we spent the morning exploring Stellenbosch. Although my mom and I had gone the previous night when we arrived, it was nice to see everything in day light. It really is a very charming town! After a few hours in Stellenbosch we continued to our last destination, Cape Town. We had two exciting stops along the way, 1. Afrikaanse Taalmuseum which overlooks Paarl and 2. Spice Route Winery, nestled in the rolling hills along the Cape West Coast, for wine tasting and lunch.

{Exploring Stellenbosch} After checking out of our hotel, we arrived with our group and had a few hours to wander around the town. It was a cooler + cloudy day, but still beautiful. Below are a few pictures showing the town, architecture and some of my favorite places we stopped at.
As the website states, “Stellenbosch is a town in the Western Cape province of South Africa, situated about 50 kilometres (31 mi) east of Cape Town, along the banks of the Eerste River. It is the second oldest European settlement in the province, after Cape Town.” Read more.
{Wijnhuis Wine Bar & Grill} Check them out.
The previous night we had walked by here but it was closed. I knew I wanted to go back the next day to check it out. Since we were there late morning it was pretty empty but is really a very cute place!! I loved all the attention to detail and the wine theme carried throughout.
Pictures below: Upstairs eating area. When it’s warm out the ceiling actually opens so you are sitting outside. Very neat.

Back to exploring the town (of course taking pictures of everything :))…
Pictures below: Quick stop to warm up before meeting our group.
{Afrikaans Language Monument, or Afrikaanse Taalmonument} Our next stop…
As the website states, “The Afrikaanse Taalmuseum and Taalmonument in Paarl celebrate the birth and continuing existence of Afrikaans. Everyone who can or wants to speak Afrikaans, or who is interested in the language, should visit this unique museum and monument to learn more about Afrikaans, the third most spoken language in South Africa. Afrikaans is the mother tongue of more than six million speakers and is spoken by just as many people as a second or third language.” Read more.
{Spice Route Winery} Check them out.
You can’t come to this area and not go to a winery (I wish we had time for more). We enjoyed wine tasting followed by a delicious lunch at Spice Route.
As the website states, “The Stellenbosch, Paarl and Franschhoek valleys form the Cape Winelands, the larger of the two main wine growing regions in South Africa. The South African wine industry produces about 1,000,000,000 litres of wine annually. Stellenbosch is the primary location for viticulture and viticulture research.” Read more.
Another wonderful day! Check back next week as we arrive at our final destination, Cape Town.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Great photography. A week would be great to explore and test more of the fantastic wineries in this region. Chakalaka!!!
Beautiful scenery…enticing wines…quaint little shops…what’s not to love???
Exactly! Really a charming area to explore.
Chakalaka is an ancient war cry. Translating the original language the phonetic spelling was closer to Shuckalakar!
…Ok, I made that up but couldn’t help myself after Karen’s comment. It was such a fun day! The photos are fantastic and bring back heaps of memories including that day exploring Stellenbosch, the protea flowers that are so similar to our banksias,’ the Taalmonument and of course our winery tour and lunch!
Haha, always making the group laugh. Yes, it was a great day exploring before heading to Cape Town.
Let me know next time you go, I’ll back my bags. 🙂
Excellent!! Lets go 🙂
