Rewind + October | Crystal & Sam + maternity session | Alexandria, VA

Today’s tidbit: “A baby will make love stronger, days shorter, nights longer, bankroll smaller, home happier, clothes shabbier, the past forgotten, and the future worth living for.” — unknown

I was honored when I was asked to take maternity pictures of Sam and Crystal, who met in 2003 at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute where Sam went to school. Crystal had a college friend that was dating one of Sam’s friends and she went up to Rensselaer with her friend one weekend… where they hit it off and fell in love. They got engaged in June 2004 and were married in Massachusetts on December 26, 2004 and as they say, the rest was history.

Sneak peek images: My first maternity photo shoot (and how I spent my lunch break on a beautiful fall day). Can you believe Raeley made her early debut in the world only a week after these pictures were taken? They look amazing!

Rewind + September | Charlottesville

Today’s tidbit: “Slow down and enjoy life. It’s not only the scenery you miss by going to fast – you also miss the sense of where you are going and why.“ — Eddie Cantor
Something to remember when it seems like everything is moving fast and is stressful.

Along with beautiful wineries, Charlottesville also has lots of outdoor activities. Exploring and hiking trails in Monticello followed by a quick dip for Sammy and lunch by the water makes for a perfect Saturday…especially when the leaves are starting to change.

Rewind + August | YMCA 160 Challenge

Today’s tidbit: “Children make you want to start life over.” — Muhammad Ali
Instead, I want to look at them and remember the innocence and curiosity about everyday things that as we grow older we seem to just pass by. Like them, I want to get excited and welcome new experiences.

I love being in a design studio, but when the weather is nice out it can be painful. I am such an outdoor person and I hate being inside not enjoying it. So, when opportunities present themselves to spend the afternoon outside I jump on it. TGD designed the YMCA 160 logo, website and collateral pieces.

Rewind + August | 24th Birthday Celebrations

Today’s tidbit: “The more you praise and celebrate your life, the more there is in life to celebrate.”

Oprah Winfrey
Something to remember… live and celebrate your life, don’t just exist.

Twenty-four…where does the time go? I can’t believe next year I will be 25! Like my blog mentioning little details, I am all about the little things. A handmade card, a little note, surprise flowers… those have always been the little things that mean so much more to me, and this year for my birthday I was pleasantly surprised throughout the day. My ideal day would be spending it with close friends and family relaxing and trying new things…and that’s exactly what I got this year. It was really a three-tier birthday. I had a celebration at work, and then came home to my room full of surprises from my roommates and boyfriend! I loved all the handmade cards and notes on the white boards. Red velvet GF cupcakes were waiting along with Sammy’s very own cupcake (which he inhaled).

Rewind + August | Charlottesville wineries

Today’s tidbit: “Wine is one of the most civilized things in the world and one of the most natural things of the world that has been brought to the greatest perfection, and it offers a greater range for enjoyment and appreciation than, possibly, any other purely sensory thing.” ― Ernest Hemingway

After a busy and stressful week, there is nothing like a beautiful drive out to the wineries in Charlottesville on a fall day. With a variety of well-known vineyards nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Charlottesville wineries are nothing short of stunning.

Rewind + August | 1 year reflection at TGD

Today’s tidbit: “Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don’t settle.” — Steve Jobs
I couldn’t agree with this more. I think this was always somewhere in the back of my mind during high school and college. In high school I had no clue what I wanted to do and changed my mind so many times. I didn’t want to settle and couldn’t imagine picking one thing to do. In college I dabbled in many different majors and activities trying to figure out what to pursue. I think some people, like my sister, are born knowing what they want and are meant to do. For others, like me, it takes longer. You just have to keep looking until you find it!

Having changed majors and schools a few times, I learned everything happens at a certain time. You have to stop trying to plan everything, and embrace change and what comes your way. The events following graduation were no exception. As I mentioned in my first blog post, I think both luck and hard work came into play along with being at the right place at the right time. As soon as I graduated college I was able to land an internship at ASCD in Alexandria. Not only did I work along side Lindsey, one of my GMU design friends who I looked up to and admired, but I also had my favorite professor, Reece as my creative director.

While I interned, I continued to work on my portfolio and apply to jobs. July 2011 was a busy month with three interviews and two job offers—one of which I accepted. Sometimes you just know and at that time everything was lining up perfectly. After my interview I went back to my internship at ASCD where everyone was asking me how it went. Within a few hours, I was staring at a job offer on my screen with Lindsey and Reece jumping for joy. It was an amazing feeling! I accepted my first full time job at a design agency, TGD Communications, Inc. in Old Town Alexandria, starting on August 1st.

I have been with TGD over a year now. It is a small enough agency where you are always working on different projects and multitasking, and yet it is large enough that there are always other designers to collaborate with and help. It’s a great balance. I enjoy being able to take a break and walk along the water in Old Town. When the owners’ dog, Olive isn’t here a few colleagues and I rotate bringing our dogs in. Sammy has come to work a few times, which is a nice added bonus. I have worked on a variety of projects with many different designers and clients. While it can be stressful, I am enjoying it and learning something new every day!

Rewind + June | Pamela & Sim + Old Town Alexandria engagement session

Today’s tidbit: “The greatest thing you’ll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return.” — Eden Ahbez

I was thrilled when I was asked to be a bridesmaid, and honored when I was asked to take engagement pictures of one of my favorite couples and close friends. Pamela was my partner in crime and one of my roommates at GMU. We have only grown closer since graduating. I have to say knowing when Sim was going to propose was one of the biggest, and hardest, secrets I have ever had to keep.

Rewind + May | Cruisin’ to Miami + Nassau + Coco Cay + Key West

Today’s tidbit: “We live in a wonderful world that is full of beauty, charm and adventure. There is no end to the adventures we can have if only we seek them with our eyes open.” ― Jawaharal Nehru.
Look at the world around you. Take time to notice the beauty and charm in every new, and old, place you go. Stay open-minded and appreciate where you have been and what you have.

In 2008 and 2009 I was fortunate enough to go on cruises to the Caribbean. It is just amazing how naturally beautiful everything is. There is vivid color everywhere, from the pristine beaches and landscape to the bright buildings and unique wildlife. This cruise to the Bahamas, in May 2012, was a little different. The other cruises I went on were with family, where here I was able to go with my boyfriend and his family, for whom it was their first cruise. I loved being able to experience all of it together and go on new adventures. From nightlife and shopping, to pristine beaches and fabulous snorkeling, there was never a dull moment.

Rewind + May | 1 year reflection after my graduation trip

Today’s tidbit: “One’s destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things.” ― Henry Miller
No matter where you go there is always something new to experience, someone to learn from and a new perspective and way to see things.

From rain and snow, to drought and desert we experienced it all. I have been to northern and southern California
(both of which I love!), but hadn’t seen much of the southwest. As a graduation trip my mom, twin sister and boyfriend decided to plan a trip exploring as much of Colorado as we could in a little under 2 weeks. I love seeing new places and experiencing new food, activities, culture, landscapes—everything! You can read about it and see pictures online, but there is nothing like experiencing it first hand.

Rewind + May | 1 year reflection after graduating

Today’s tidbit: “Stop worrying about the potholes in the road. Celebrate the journey.” — Fitzhugh Mullan
Things have a way of falling into placeyou just have to let them. There will be bumps along the way, but that’s what makes us grow and become stronger. You have to stop trying to plan everything, and embrace change and what comes your way.

For my final design class at George Mason University I was tasked with writing and designing a book. With freedom
to choose any topic, I figured there could be no better chance to combine two important aspects of my life—photography and Celiac Disease—in an effort to connect with people diagnosed with the disease on a more personal, positive and colorful level. In “The Ins and Outs of Celiac”, the reader is confronted with a fuller understanding of not only what the disease is but also the people it has affected. This is accomplished through surprising statistics, bold typography and riveting photographs. Instead of focusing on the limitations and the negative, what is “Out”, the focus is on the positive, what is “In”. As someone who has Celiac Disease, instead of thinking of everything I cannot have and the limitations, I believe it is important to realize all the different options out there that we may not have experienced before. I believe life should be thought of in the same way.

Once I finished the book, I sent those who had shared their personal stories a complete copy. Nothing topped the feeling of satisfaction I felt as I received their positive and emotional reactions and sincere appreciation that I wanted to ensure their stories were known. During opening night of the Senior Art & Design Show, I felt a strong sense of accomplishment as I saw person after person flip through my book and watched them get excited over learning more about the disease. After hours of research, countless all-nighters and time spent in the lab and recipes being prepared and photographed, all the work and determination paid off… especially when I heard people say they’d like to purchase the book. It was a huge success and a rewarding experience.
